Delirium Tremens Beer Review - Manic Magic
With a rich history of brewing since 1654, Melle in Belgium is home to the Brewery Huyghe, best known for its flagship beer Delerium Tremens. Beginning with Léon Huyghe in 1902 the brewery has continued to proudly remain a family run business and is now run by 4th generation Huyghe, Alain De Laet. This family run approach has proven successful, with the brewery exporting to over 85 countries worldwide and Delerium Tremens receiving numerous yearly international beer awards:
• Gold Frankfurt International Trophy 2021
• Meiningers International Craft Beer Award 2020
• International Beer Challenge 2020
Delerium Tremens derives its name and identifying pink elephant logo from hallucinations associated with alcohol withdrawal in which those suffering from the condition of delirium tremens are said to be ‘seeing pink elephants.’ Although it is bold and perhaps dated to associate the drink with serious alcohol withdrawal symptoms, the association makes sense. At 8.5% ABV Delerium Tremens, as proudly stated on their label is a Belgian Strong Beer and so if you see that pink elephant, you will know that your thirst for alcohol will be quenched. As a suitable entry point for trying Belgian Beers, Delerium Tremens is easy to recommend as an introductory beer for those looking to expand their tastes, acting as a reliable go to drink when looking for something slightly stronger. With light fruity aromas, Tremens can be described as mild but overall, very pleasant. Though a light flavour, the taste of Delerium Tremens is certainly unique, which Delerium claims to be due to the use of three different kinds of yeast.
Despite being as strong as it is, Delerium Tremens is incredibly easy to drink. With a sweet initial taste and a lingering dry finish, the beer goes down very smoothly. Due to its relative lightness and consistency similar to a sparkling wine, Delerium Tremens is not as heavy as other Belgian beers but there is certainly a lasting punch to it that makes Delerium Tremens a very drinkable crisp beer and an overall enjoyable experience.
With their unique stoneware bottles, Delerium beers stand out on the shelf and are easy to spot in most supermarkets. Whether you see the iconic pink elephant on a bottle or the top of a beer tap, you can be reassured that you will be getting a high-quality beer worthy of its praise and awards. While Tremens is a reliable safe choice, it’s worth trying the Huyghe Brewery’s more adventurous options such as the Delerium Red, a dark fruity beer with a mild cherry flavour. As a brand Delerium has a wide range of award-winning options that are easy to recommend. As shown by Delerium Tremens you can trust the Huyghe family to provide satisfying beers with notable flavours that don’t overwhelm.
